International: DA victim given ex-partner’s job

Valeria Juarez was offered – and accepted – the gardening job once held by her abusive former partner in Santa Rosa, La Pampa province, Argentina.

The local authority has a policy that any employee convicted of domestic violence loses their job, which must then be offered to their victim.

Juarez was quoted as saying in media reports: “I lived in fear. I was psychologically tormented. I couldn’t sleep at night, and now I am trying just to be as happy as I can possibly be. It’s a huge relief. I’ve got a stable job and I can feed my kids.”

The Santa Rosa council’s head of gender policy and diversity, Gabriela Bonavitta, said the job swap was a kind of reparation.

Juarez’s ex-partner was convicted of threatening behaviour and jailed for two years.
