More legal protection for DA victims in Scotland

Scottish police and courts can ban suspected domestic abusers from re-entering the home and approaching or contacting a person at risk after the nation’s Parliament passed the Domestic Abuse (Protection) (Scotland) Bill.

The measures are aimed at enabling the victim to have time to consider their longer-term options around safety and housing.

The legislation will also allow social landlords to end a perpetrator’s tenancy or transfer it to the victim.

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said: “A person’s home should be a place of safety and we know that is not always the case … This Bill represents a significant shift forward in ensuring protection can be put in place for women, in particular, from domestic abuse.”
