Abuser’s sentence increased

The appeal court has found the original sentence on a man who left his ex-partner dependent on carers to be unduly lenient and increased his jail term to 17½ years plus four years on licence.

Adam Fleming of Ramsgate was originally imprisoned for 14 years with four years on licence for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 27-year-old inflicted on his victim such a traumatic brain injury that she now requires full nursing care and has to use a wheelchair.

Solicitor general Alex Chalk, who referred the case to the court of appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, said: “Adam Fleming’s savage attack has left his former partner with life-changing injuries, and she will never be able to live independently again as a result. No sentence can rectify the appalling damage done by Fleming, but the increased sentence shows that cowardly domestic abusers can expect to go to prison for a long time.”
