Child-on-parent violence rises in Wales

Incidents of children attacking their parents have increased since the first lockdown, according to the Wales Violence Prevention Unit.

Referrals to its government-funded Parallel Lives programme have gone up a third since the outbreak of coronavirus in March 2020.

“We’ve seen cases where children have thrown television sets at parents,” Nick Corrigan, who runs Parallel Lives, was quoted as saying by the Wales Online news service.

“We have seen cases where they have attacked parents with hammers, with knives from the kitchen … We’re getting younger and younger referrals. In the last week, we’ve had referrals for five-year-olds.”

The Wales Violence Prevention Unit brings together public and voluntary organisations to find ways to reduce violence in the principality.
