Multi-million boost to domestic abuse projects in capital

London mayor Sadiq Khan has announced £15m of fresh funding for the Mayor’s Domestic Abuse Safe Accommodation programme.

The money will help add 14 projects to the 70-plus already supported.

“Sadly, cases of domestic abuse continue to rise and we know the cost-of-living crisis is leaving many survivors with the dilemma of staying with perpetrators of abuse or facing financial uncertainty and hardship,” he said.

The financially tougher times also put strain on vital support services, which often operate on small budgets, he added.

“This funding will support organisations and community projects doing life-changing work by providing safe places for survivors of domestic abuse to live and the specialist support they need, as we continue to work together to build a safer London,” he said.

Metropolitan Police recorded more than 96,000 domestic abuse-related offences last year, an 8% increase on the 12 months to February 2020, before the Covid lockdowns.
