Government boosts support to DA charities during coronavirus crisis
The home office says it is providing an additional £2m to immediately bolster domestic abuse helplines and online support.
With survivors’ support charities reporting a surge in calls for help and advice since Britain went into Covid-19 lockdown, the funding will help ensure all victims can access vital support safely and securely, the home office said.
A messaging service with domestic abuse experts will benefit those most at risk of abuse to seek support, help and guidance when it might be difficult for them to talk on the phone.
The funds are in addition to the £750m to be made available for the whole charity sector. The government is urging organisations supporting domestic abuse survivors to bid when the new scheme is up and running in the coming weeks.
Home secretary Priti Patel has also launched a public awareness raising campaign, under the hashtag #YouAreNotAlone, to reassure anyone at risk of, or experiencing, domestic abuse that help is available.
Services include the free, 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247 run by Refuge, and www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk
