The Women Out West group in Whitehaven, Cumbria, is to try out bodycams on ten women who suffer domestic abuse.
The idea came from incidences of abuse greatly reducing or stopping all together after CCTV was installed in a victim’s home, but a realisation she was still vulnerable when out shopping or taking the children to school.
“I honestly feel if we can support dashcams to protect cars and drivers, surely we can provide bodycams to protect victims?” the project’s promotor Rachel Holliday was quoted as saying by local newspaper, The Whitehaven News.
It is hoped that the cameras will act as a deterrent.
Detective Chief Inspector James Yallop said: ‘I welcome any measures that not only help keep people safe but also make them feel safe.”
The pilot project has been made possible after Women Out West were awarded £1,920 from the Sellafield Snowball Fund, a charitable organisation linked to the Sellafield nuclear plant.
