Refuge and internet security company Avast have released a list of internet-connected (IoT) devices most used by perpetrators of domestic abuse against their victims.
The top ten is:
- RING doorbells
- Amazon Alexa and Amazon Echo
- Google Home Hub
- Nest systems and smart thermostats
- Smart TVs
- Smart plugs
- Fitness trackers and Smartwatches (Apple Watch)
- Wireless systems
- Smart locks
- CCTV cameras
“For most people, smart devices offer convenience in the home and while manufacturers such as Amazon, Google and Apple take precautions to mitigate abuse, in the wrong hands, internet-connected devices can be used by abusers to harm and exert control over their partners,” the organisations said in a joint statement.
With an increasing number of women seeking guidance from Refuge on how to secure their tech devices, the domestic abuse support charity and Avast have launched an IoT home safety tool designed to highlight ways smart home devices can be misused and help women keep their devices safe and free from abuse.
